Delaware Valley University has appointed Bill Zwaan as the new head football coach of the Aggies, marking him as the 33rd person to lead the program.
Executive Director of Athletics David Duda said, “I am delighted to announce the hiring of Bill Zwaan. This is an important hire at such a crucial time for football recruiting and retention, and Billy has an organized plan for this mid-academic-year transition. Billy comes from great stock being part of a successful, well-respected football family. He is a brilliant football mind, and we look forward to supporting Billy and his staff in the pursuit of his lofty goals for our football program. He will be a great leader of young men, both on and off the field of play, and will be an asset to our entire campus community.”
Zwaan expressed his appreciation for the opportunity by stating, “I want to thank Delaware Valley University President Rusiloski and Athletic Director Dave Duda for giving me this opportunity. DelVal is an excellent school with a tradition of great athletic programs, especially football. I come from a program, both as a player and a coach, that has an outstanding athletic and football tradition, and that experience will help me develop a program that continues DelVal’s football success and one that people will be proud to be a part of.”
Before joining Delaware Valley University, Zwaan spent 13 seasons at West Chester University where he served as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator. In these roles, he oversaw all aspects of the offense including staffing decisions, planning practices and games, developing playbooks, recruiting players, monitoring academics, and managing personnel.
During his time at West Chester University, Zwaan helped guide the team to five NCAA Playoff appearances between 2013 and 2019. The Golden Rams reached the NCAA Semifinals in 2013 and secured their first outright PSAC Championship since 1971 in 2018. The team also won four PSAC East Division titles during his tenure.
The offenses led by Zwaan regularly ranked among the top in Division II college football by averaging over 420 yards per game and more than 35 points per game while setting several school records in key offensive categories.
Throughout his coaching career, Zwaan has coached numerous high-achieving players including 38 All-Conference selections, two First Team All-Americans, six Honorable Mention All-Americans, three Conference Players of the Year, three Academic All-Americans, and one Maxwell Award Player of the Year.
Zwaan’s previous experience includes positions at Widener University from 2009 to 2011 as quarterbacks coach as well as recruiting coordinator and academic coordinator. He also coached at Lycoming College during the 2008 season where he contributed to a MAC Championship win and NCAA Playoff appearance.
As a player at West Chester University himself, Zwaan was recognized as a standout quarterback who started for three years. He finished fifth all-time in passing yards (6,825) and touchdown passes (65) for the program. His achievements included First Team All-PSAC honors in 2007 along with recognition from both the Maxwell Football Club Tri-State College Player of the Year award and Bert Bell Local College MVP distinction.
He graduated from West Chester University in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in Professional Studies along with minors in Secondary Education and History.
Zwaan takes over from Mike Isgro ’10 who stepped down after two seasons leading Delaware Valley University’s football team to accept another position at West Chester University. During Isgro’s leadership period with Delaware Valley University’s Aggies he achieved a record of 16–6 overall—including two Centennial–MAC Bowl appearances—and led them to victory in a bowl series championship during the 2024 season while coaching several players who received All-American honors.
