ACME TOOLS: Replacing damaged exterior door

Garage door(1000)

Acme Tools issued the following announcement on July 22.

Replacing damaged exterior door weather stripping now, while the weather is warm, will lower your energy bill and eliminate drafts this coming fall and winter. Not all of the door’s weather stripping has to be replaced at the same time – only the damaged sides. It’s a simple process. Just grab a piece of the damaged strip and pull it out of the groove in the door frame. Often it is easier to start from the top.

The strip’s spline is not glued in place. So, once you get it started, the spline should continue to slip easily from the groove. Clean the groove and remove any remaining pieces of stripping. Then cut a new piece of weather stripping to length and insert the spline into the groove. Note: For doors older than 25 years, you may encounter stripping that has been glued along the edge of the frame. If you encounter this, remove the damaged stripping, and replace it with the type of stripping that has an adhesive backing.
