All Bucks County Government and Court Offices will be closed on Monday, October 10, 2022 in observance of Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples' Day.
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt celebrated the first National Columbus Day in 1934. The holiday commemorates the voyage of Christopher Columbus as he landed and explored the "New World" in 1492. Columbus Day was moved from October 12th to the second Monday in October in 1971 when it was designated as a federal holiday.
One of the earliest celebrations of Indigenous Peoples' Day took place in 1992, as an alternative to Columbus Day. Native Americans took it as an alternative to Columbus Day, which they protested because it was a sign of colonization and oppression of Indigenous People. In 2021, the United States celebrated its first National Indigenous Peoples' Day when President Joe Biden proclaimed the day to honor “our diverse history and the Indigenous peoples who contribute to shaping this Nation.”
Both holidays are celebrated on the second Monday in October every year.
