New Hope man supports school choice

A New Hope man said he supports Catholic schools and school choice, but issues like life are more important.

Michael Dougherty, a sales consultant with five children, said his kids were able to go to a Catholic school for several years before their school closed.

"I think they do generally a pretty good job," Dougherty said in an interview with Central Bucks Today. "But...I think we've just seen a falling off of commitment to them in a lot of respects so, I wish it was stronger."

Dougherty said school choice is really important and that parents should have the choice or not to send their children to either a private school or a Catholic school if they want.

"There's no reason why they shouldn't be allowed to do that," Dougherty said.

Dougherty said that while he wouldn't directly oppose a candidate who did not support school choice, he would be more likely to support a candidate who was pro-school choice.

"I think it's important that you have that school choice to be able to send your child wherever you want," Dougherty said.

Dougherty said important issues for Catholics this election cycle include the life issue.

"Life at all stages of your life from...fertilization to natural death," Dougherty said. "So in there encompasses a lot of different issues."

Dougherty said he is also in favor of Supreme Court justices that are going to be constitutionally looking at the law.

Dougherty said the primary issue for Catholics should be the life issue because, without life, you don't really have any other rights.

"I think it's an absolute...paramount issue that we need to take into account when we go into the voting booth," Dougherty said.

Dougherty said he wouldn't support a candidate that didn't support the right to life.
